ULTERA ANNOUNCES IMAGER FOR PRODUCING
MULTIPLE BACKUP TAPES SIMULTANEOUSLY AT UP TO 40MB/SEC
LAGUNA HILLS, Calif., July 19, 1999.... Ultera
Systems today announced plug-and-play mirroring controllers for producing two or more
backup tapes as quickly as one. The Imager series of controllers appears to have a
single drive or autoloader but actually mirrors the data being backed up onto two drives
or two autoloaders, running them at their maximum recording speed. By cascading the
devices, a user can produce four, six or more copies simultaneously without a sacrifice in
speed.
"Many enterprises, including those running financial applications, need more than
one copy of their backup tapes," explained Fred Bedard, Ultera's Vice President of
Sales and Marketing. "Frequently they need one backup tape on-site for easy access
and another off-site for disaster recovery. Imager lets them record both at the same time,
with or without an operator present. In fact, we are seeing more applications in this area
now incorporating tape libraries."
The Imager series includes two models. Imager 1 operates at up to 20MB/sec burst rate
over a SCSI-1 or SCSI-2 host channel, and records at up to 10MB/sec onto two individual
drives or two autoloaders. Imager 2 can sustain data rates up to 40MB/sec from the host
and maintain this throughput to the drives. Imager 2 also supports tape libraries
providing a fully transparent means to mirror data in backup, archiving and disaster
recovery applications.
Imagers can be managed on-line through a GUI interface, which is compatible with
Windows95, 98 and NT. Imagers can also be operated off-line through their own control
panel for tape copying, comparing or verifying. MSRP starts at $4,050 for the Internal
half-height 5.25 inch. Desktop and rackmount units are available for immediate delivery.
