Ultera
Systems Adds "Lite" Version to the Mirage Virtual
Tape Family
Mirage Lite VTC provides entry-level Virtual Tape
Solution at low cost
LAGUNA
HILLS, Calif., May 27, 2003 — Ultera Systems, the leading
provider of high performance tape/RAID controllers, today
announced an important addition to the Mirage Virtual Tape
Controller (VTC) family - the Mirage Lite. The Mirage
Lite VTC is intended to satisfy the demand of the higher
volume, entry-level server market. The Mirage Lite
controller operates as a hard drive based virtual tape library
integrating seamlessly into existing backup environments
providing high performance backup and restore with instant
file access and a unique patent pending embedded archive
capability to conventional tape devices.
The new Mirage Lite VTC will revolutionize the
way entry level server, Workgroup, or Departments backup their
data and provide “real data protection” without having to
worry about backup windows and budget, all without making any
changes to existing software or hardware. The Mirage Lite
fully supports ALL industry tape drives, tape libraries and
hard drive/RAID and is totally application software
transparent. Significant features of the Mirage Lite VTC
include: high-speed reliable backup and restore, embedded
“server free” archival operation, which decouples tape
drives from the backup and restore function and archives to
them at their full recording speed thus minimizing wear and
tear, and increased tape drive utilization. Tape drive
utilization will triple at a minimum, by creating an
independent archival window of 24 hours versus the 8-hour
conventional backup window. The “embedded archive
capability” initiates and manages the archive operation
based on options selected; no additional backup software is
required. The archive operation automatically moves data
stored in the virtual library to the attached conventional
tape drive/autoloader. The Mirage Lite VTC eliminates
additional hardware and software expenditures required to
increase backup performance by utilizing existing backup
software and hardware significantly reducing total cost of
ownership. “The current economic climate and tight IT
budgets put the pressure on to provide a complete Virtual Tape
Library Solution that can be purchased for less than
$10,000.00!" said Mo Nour, president and founder of
Ultera Systems.
Tape is Still Needed for Archive and Disaster Recovery
While
the Mirage Lite VTC is the core of a very high performance
reliable Virtual Tape Solution, tape media will continue to
play a critical role in Disaster Recovery (DR) requirements.
The design principal behind the Mirage Lite VTC is to enhance
its utilization within the current IT environment. That
said, Mirage has repositioned tape to its appropriate place as
an archival storage device as opposed to a backup device.

VTC is offered as a base hardware configuration in a 5.25”
